The United Nations’ special rapporteur on the right to food, Michael Fakhri, has issued a grave warning regarding Israel’s actions in Gaza, labeling it as “the fastest starvation campaign in modern history.” Speaking at a press briefing in Geneva alongside other UN officials, Fakhri raised concerns over the dire situation affecting 2.3 million residents of Gaza.
“How is Israel able to starve 2.3 million people so quickly and so completely?” Fakhri questioned, emphasizing the devastating impact of Israel’s blockade, which has effectively halted all humanitarian aid to the region. He reiterated the alarming nature of the situation, stating, “This is not a ceasefire by any definition. This is a slowing down of military violence, but … unfolding of death through starvation.”

Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, echoed Fakhri’s sentiments, warning that even if hostilities ceased immediately, the consequences of destruction would continue, describing the ongoing crisis as a form of genocide. She highlighted the escalating violence in the West Bank, stating, “The genocidal violence is leaking out,” and expressed frustration over the international community’s inaction, questioning, “How many warnings will we need?”
Adding to the discourse, Ben Saul, the UN special rapporteur on human rights protection, condemned proposals from the US administration to relocate Gaza’s population, labeling such plans as illegal and a violation of international law. “It would shatter the most fundamental rules of international order and the United Nations Charter since 1945,” Saul asserted, stressing that any future decisions regarding Gaza must align with the Palestinian people’s aspirations.
The UN’s stark warnings highlight an urgent humanitarian crisis in Gaza, calling for immediate international attention and action to address the unfolding tragedy.
