Millions Join Historic Funeral Procession for Imam Khamenei in Tehran

Crowds of mourners attended the funeral procession for the martyred Leader Imam Khamenei and several members of his family in Tehran (Monday, July 6, 2026).

Millions of mourners filled the streets of Tehran on Monday morning as the coffin of the martyred Leader of the Islamic Revolution Imam Ali Khamenei, was carried in a historic funeral procession toward Azadi Square.

Crowds surged across the Iranian capital as the procession began, in what officials described as the largest public turnout in the country’s modern history.

Alongside the Leader’s coffin, the procession also bore the flag-draped coffins of several members of his family, who were martyred with him on the first day of the recent US-Israeli war of aggression on February 28.

Dressed in black, vast crowds packed Tehran’s streets as the convoy moved through the city. Mourners chanted slogans calling for revenge for the Leader’s blood and for continued resistance, while waving Iranian flags and holding his portraits.

Organizers said the procession is expected to last between 10 and 12 hours, following a 10-kilometer route passing through Damavand Street, Imam Hossein Square, Enghelab Street, Enghelab Square, Azadi Street, Azadi Square, and Shahid Lashgari Highway near Mehrabad Airport.

On Sunday, Grand Ayatollah Jaafar Sobhani led funeral prayers for the martyred Leader, his son-in-law Dr. Mesbah-ul-Hoda Bagheri-Kani, his daughter-in-law Zahraa Haddad-Adel, his granddaughter Zahraa Mohammadi-Golpayegani (14 months), and his daughter Seyyedeh Boshra Hosseini-Khamenei.

According to organizers, funeral ceremonies for Imam Khamenei and his family will continue on Tuesday in the holy city of Qom, followed by additional farewell and funeral events on Wednesday in the Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala.

The final rites are scheduled for Thursday in the northeastern city of Mashhad, where Ayatollah Khamenei will be laid to rest at the shrine of Imam Reza (AS), in accordance with his will.
