Iran’s Foreign Ministry Warns Global Order Eroding as International Law Is Violated

Esmail Baqaei Head of Center for Public Diplomacy and Spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Islamic Republic of Iran

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei warned on Monday that the world is drifting toward a “law of the jungle” as a result of continued violations of international law.

Speaking at his weekly press conference in Tehran, Baghaei was asked about the United States’ withdrawal from several international agreements. He described the move as “another alarm bell” for the international community, stressing that the ultimate victims of this trend are international law and norms—an outcome that should concern all countries.

Turning to domestic economic issues, Baghaei addressed Iran’s ongoing paper shortage, revealing that the Foreign Ministry’s “economic diplomacy” had intervened to help resolve the crisis. He said the Secretariat of the Joint Economic Commission regularly discusses such challenges, noting that the paper shortage had been on the agenda and has been largely alleviated in recent weeks by accelerating procedures for imported shipments.

Baghaei added that the issue was also discussed during an official visit to Belarus, where “good understandings” were reached on importing paper from the country—an arrangement expected to further ease the shortage.

Responding to a question about recent protests in Iran and the role of the United States, Baghaei pointed to what he called “clear contradictions in the positions of U.S. officials.” He cited an incident in the United States in which a young woman was shot for failing to heed a police warning, comparing it to what he described as attacks against ordinary citizens and law enforcement personnel in Iran during the protests. He claimed that several citizens were shot “from within the crowds or from behind.”

Baghaei concluded that such comparisons “only expose the lack of sincerity in the statements and behavior of some Western parties.” He argued that the issue deserves broad attention, asserting that Iran has been subjected to “a terrorist act” and that there is “abundant, clear evidence and documentation” to support this claim.

Some of this evidence, Baghaei said, was broadcast live by both domestic and foreign media, citing as examples the “direct use of firearms against demonstrators” and attacks on markets and mosques.
