Most Americans Say Iran War Proving Tougher than Trump Expected: CBS Poll

Donald Trump speaks to the media as he departs after meeting with Republican senators at the U.S. Capitol, on June 24, 2026 in Washington, D.C.

A growing majority of Americans believe the conflict with Iran is unfolding far more difficultly than the Trump administration had anticipated, with most now bracing for a prolonged war lasting for months, according to a new CBS News poll.

The survey underscores deepening pessimism as tensions rise, with respondents overwhelmingly describing the situation as “uncertain” and “frustrating,” and expressing doubts about day-to-day clarity, particularly around developments in the Strait of Hormuz.

58% of respondents said they feel uncertain about the war with Iran while 58% said they feel frustrated, the poll found.

Meanwhile, 76% of respondents said they found that the conflict with Iran has been harder than expected, while 20% said it was about as expected, according to the poll.

Despite continued public support for key objectives, including reopening the vital waterway, “curbing Iran’s nuclear program, and reducing regional threats”, most Americans no longer see those goals as easily achievable.

A majority say the war is not going well and favor ending the conflict rather than seeking further concessions from Tehran.

Still, that preference has softened since a proposed ceasefire deal collapsed, with fewer Americans now backing an immediate end to the war, a shift driven largely by Republicans who have rallied behind continuing the fight.
