Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has described the recent riots targeting Iran as atrocities resembling those committed by the ISIL (ISIS) Takfiri terrorist group, stating they represent a continuation of the war imposed on the country by the United States and the Israeli regime.
The top diplomat made the remarks on Tuesday during an online meeting with the Islamic Republic’s ambassadors to European Union member states.
Araghchi reiterated his condemnation of Washington’s and Tel Aviv’s interference in Iran’s internal affairs, accusing the allies of providing riotous elements with arms, intelligence, and logistical support in an attempt to divert economic protests across the country towards violent unrest.
He stated the goal of the riots was to weaken and destabilize the country, while expressing gratitude towards Iranian security forces for restoring calm by confronting the perpetrators.
The Foreign Minister also thanked the Iranian nation for the millions-strong demonstrations held throughout the country on Monday in support of the Islamic establishment and in condemnation of foreign meddling.
He emphasized the importance of Iran’s diplomats in Europe accurately conveying the atrocious nature of these recent activities to host governments, the Iranian diaspora, and public opinion.
The comments follow attempts by riot ringleaders and their operatives to hijack protests that began in late December.
Also on Monday, Araghchi stated during a meeting with Tehran-based diplomats that evidence and recordings proved these elements had tried to maximize casualties to pave the way for renewed foreign aggression against Iranian territory, as recently threatened by US President Donald Trump.
Iranian officials have vowed to address protesters’ legitimate concerns, while simultaneously emphasizing that the country will not tolerate any efforts to undermine its stability and sovereignty.
