Senior US military leaders are actively seeking a face-saving way out of the six-month-long war with Iran, according to a CNN report citing informed sources.
The network stated that in recent weeks, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Keane has made it clear in private conversations with other senior advisors to President Donald Trump that the United States needs to find a way out of the conflict.
CNN explained that Keane’s view stems from the assessment that available military options for escalating the conflict could backfire, and that air power alone is unlikely to achieve the objectives Trump has laid out.
According to two of the sources cited by the network, Keane is not alone in his view that the war has reached a crossroads. He has discussed his concerns about military escalation options and raised the idea of finding a way out with other senior administration officials, including CIA Director John Ratcliffe, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Vice President JD Vance.
The prominent US general has also recently held sideline talks with several of Trump’s key advisors who share his views, in an effort to facilitate interagency coordination and ensure alignment of perspectives ahead of meetings with the president.
According to CNN, this coordinated move aims to clarify the limitations and risks associated with the available military options including those that avoid deploying US ground troops.
