Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi denounced the European Union’s interventionist statements on Iran under the pretext of human rights, saying the bloc lacks any moral standing to lecture others because of its own record on human rights.
Araqchi made the remarks in a telephone conversation with his Greek counterpart Georgios Gerapetritis, during which the two sides discussed bilateral relations as well as regional and international developments.
Araqchi pointed to the continuation of the United States’ illegal and aggressive actions against Iran, including the ongoing naval blockade and violation of the June 18 understanding, stressing Iran’s determination to defend its national interests and security.
The Iranian foreign minister also outlined the latest status of bilateral talks with Oman on determining safe transit routes for vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. He described the insecurity in the strategic waterway as a direct result of the US and Israeli military aggression against Iran, stressing that the international community should hold the aggressors and violators of international law accountable for the situation.
Araqchi further criticized the European Union’s “double standards and hypocrisy” regarding human rights, particularly the comprehensive support provided by some European parties to the Zionist regime and their indifference toward the genocide of Palestinians and the war crimes committed by the Israeli regime in Lebanon and Iran.
He rejected the EU’s interventionist statements against Iran under the pretext of human rights, stressing that “the European Union, due to its performance in the field of human rights, lacks any moral standing to lecture others.”
Gerapetritis, for his part, expressed support for diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions and announced Greece’s readiness to provide any technical and expert assistance.
The two sides also stressed the continuation of existing consultations and the preservation of the longstanding relations between Iran and Greece.
