‘Billions in Damage’: Iran Strikes U.S. Intelligence Sites in Unprecedented Assault, NBC Reports

An image taken from video aired on July 21, 2026, by Iranian state TV shows Iranian drones being launched at US military installations in the region.

Iranian attacks on American facilities in the region have inflicted historic damage on U.S. intelligence infrastructure, with repair costs projected to reach billions of dollars, according to an NBC News investigation citing four sources.

The strikes mark a watershed moment in the ongoing confrontation between Tehran and Washington, representing the most extensive assault on CIA facilities and equipment since the agency’s inception in 1947, the network reported.

Intelligence Infrastructure in Crosshairs

Citing four unnamed sources, NBC News detailed that Iranian strikes deliberately targeted not only military installations but also U.S. intelligence sites and surveillance equipment across the region. Some of the damaged assets are jointly operated by the U.S. armed forces and intelligence agencies, complicating recovery and replacement efforts.

The sources indicated that repairing the affected facilities and replacing destroyed equipment will cost billions of dollars, though an exact accounting of losses has not been provided. The scale of destruction has reportedly prompted the U.S. Congress to seek emergency appropriations to rehabilitate the targeted sites.

Strategic Reassessment Underway

According to the network, the Iranian assault has compelled U.S. officials to fundamentally reconsider the deployment of personnel and intelligence resources in a region increasingly vulnerable to Iran’s military capabilities. Military experts and former U.S. officials have raised pointed questions about why the United States appeared inadequately prepared to defend its government facilities against such an attack.

The NBC report emphasized that, according to its sources, the CIA has never experienced attacks on its facilities and equipment of this magnitude and scope as those occurring during the current conflict—a stark indicator of the evolving threat landscape.

Iran Vows Sustained Capability

The report coincides with defiant statements from Iran’s military leadership. Brigadier General Hossein Mohebi, spokesman for the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, confirmed that the production of smart missiles continues uninterrupted, “contrary to the enemy’s perceptions and calculations.”

Mohebi asserted that Iran’s military response and field developments have successfully thwarted many of the enemy’s declared objectives, “most notably the attempt to show off the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.”

Decades of Confrontation

The attacks unfold against the backdrop of Iran’s sustained confrontation with American-Israeli aggression and the naval blockade imposed on its ports and coasts. Tehran has also endured decades of economic pressure and comprehensive sanctions a campaign through which Washington has thus far failed to achieve its stated objectives of altering Iranian policy or behavior.
