At least 12 people have been martyred and dozens more wounded after US forces launched missile attacks on multiple locations in southern Iran, authorities confirmed Wednesday, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing military confrontation between Washington and Tehran.
The deadliest strikes targeted three sites near the cities of Ahvaz and Aghajari in Khuzestan Province, where seven people lost their lives and eight others sustained injuries, according to Iranian officials. In a separate assault on Hormozgan Province, five people were martyred and 68 wounded after a missile struck a wedding celebration, local sources reported.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) claimed the attacks were directed at installations belonging to Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), alleging the strikes were retaliation for recent Iranian operations against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and US military positions in the region—assertions Tehran has dismissed as baseless.
Armed Forces Respond
Iran’s military has swiftly retaliated, with the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters confirming that drone and missile strikes targeted American outposts across the region.
“The strikes inflicted extensive damage on infrastructure, facilities, weapons and equipment at the bases and killed and wounded a significant number of American commanders and troops,” said Lieutenant Colonel Ebrahim Zolfaghari, spokesperson for the headquarters, in a statement Wednesday.
“These offensive operations against the Americans will continue to teach them a lesson until they regret their acts of aggression,” he added, signaling no immediate de-escalation.
Strategic Provinces Under Siege
The targeted provinces hold immense strategic value, housing critical industrial, economic and energy infrastructure that has made them repeated flashpoints throughout the ongoing US campaign against Iran.
The current wave of hostilities traces back to February 28, when US and Israeli forces launched large-scale strikes on Iranian territory. Iran’s Armed Forces have since responded with daily barrages of missiles and drones targeting US and Israeli assets while closing the strategic Strait of Hormuz to American and allied vessels.
Ceasefire in Name Only
In a bid to stem the bloodshed, Iran and the US signed the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding on June 17, intended to end aggression across all fronts. However, Washington has violated the accord in recent weeks with multiple strikes on southern Iran, prompting Tehran to renew its closure of the Strait of Hormuz and intensify attacks on US military installations across the region.
The latest violence follows a separate US strike on Iran’s Lark Island Sunday night, which the IRGC met with a combined retaliatory operation against American positions in Jordan.
With both sides trading blows and the Islamabad MoU in tatters, regional observers warn that the window for diplomatic resolution is rapidly closing as civilian casualties mount and strategic infrastructure remains firmly in the crosshairs.
