Command of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy, Rear Admiral Brigadier General Ali Azmaei, indicated that the supertanker “Al Gaya” (IMO number 9325336), which intended to pass through the prohibited area in the southern Strait of Hormuz, exploded after striking naval mines.
Attempts to control the fire were to no avail, and the entire tanker was engulfed in flames. A warning regarding the danger of this illegal passage had been issued earlier, he added.
“The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy firmly declares that the Strait of Hormuz is closed and remains under our smart control.”
