Mahdi al-Mashat, head of Yemen’s Supreme Political Council, has strongly rejected Saudi accusations that Yemen targeted Mecca, describing the allegations as a desperate attempt to mobilize Muslim populations against Yemen and divert attention from what he characterized as Saudi Arabia’s own record toward Islamic holy sites.
Al-Mashat said that Arab and Muslim peoples have become increasingly aware of the “reality of the Saudi regime”, accusing Riyadh of having violated the sanctity of the Kaaba, the Quran, and Islam’s two holiest sites while using the wealth of the Muslim nation for its own purposes.
He affirmed the Yemeni people are among the most devoted defenders of Islam’s sacred places, saying Yemenis are prepared to sacrifice themselves in defense of the Grand Mosque in Mecca. He also pointed to Yemen’s declared support for Al-Aqsa Mosque, describing it as part of the same commitment to defending Islamic holy sites.
According to al-Mashat, Yemenis have repeatedly taken to the streets to protest perceived insults against Islamic sanctities, including the Quran, the Prophet Muhammad, Mecca, and Al-Aqsa Mosque.
He argued that, rather than accusing Yemen, the Saudi government should have mobilized Muslim public opinion when former U.S. President Donald Trump was accused of portraying the Kaaba in a manner that al-Mashat said was incompatible with its religious sanctity.
Al-Mashat also made a further allegation concerning Jeffrey Epstein, claiming that the party that presented the covering of the Kaaba to Epstein was the same party now targeting Mecca and other Islamic holy sites.
The Yemeni official said Saudi Arabia’s accusations were increasingly failing to convince Arab and Muslim populations. He compared the latest allegations concerning Mecca with earlier Saudi statements about threats to international maritime navigation, arguing that such claims had similarly failed to gain credibility among the region’s peoples.
