President Masoud Pezeshkian departed for New York on Tuesday with a pledge to firmly defend Iran’s positions and convey the nation’s strength to the world at the 81st United Nations General Assembly, vowing to make the voice of the Iranian people heard despite what he described as attempts to silence it.
Speaking to reporters before his departure, the president underlined the hardships endured by the Iranian people and servicemen in preserving their unity and defending the nation against foreign aggression.
“We emerged from it with our heads held high, and this is a source of dignity and pride for all of us. Therefore, we will firmly defend our positions in international forums,” Pezeshkian said.
“The UN General Assembly is a place where we can convey our positions, our grievances, and our strength to the world,” he added.
The president noted that this year’s General Assembly theme was the restoration of trust among nations, lamenting that trust had been undermined on the world stage and international frameworks disregarded. He accused some countries of using their power to pressure others and violate the rights of nations.
“At the General Assembly, I will speak about the grievances of the Iranian people, the crimes committed by our enemies, and the mistrust they have created,” Pezeshkian said. “We have entered negotiations several times and signed an agreement, yet they acted despite the negotiations and understandings reached.”
Addressing the latest round of unprovoked US-Israeli aggression that targeted the country from February 28 until April 7, including attacks on purely civilian targets, the president asked: “Is attacking homes and hospitals a fight against terrorism?”
Pezeshkian also condemned the US move to prevent Iran’s media delegation from attending the General Assembly, saying it demonstrated an effort to block the Iranian people’s voice from being heard.
Concluding his remarks, the president expressed confidence that the Iranian nation would frustrate its enemies “under the leadership of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution [Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei], and through the unity and cohesion that we have and will continue to maintain.”
