Lebanon’s right to prosecute Israel for its crimes in Lebanon is a sovereign right that cannot be relinquished, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri said on Tuesday, while calling for continued international pressure on Israel to end its war on Lebanon.
“Lebanon’s right to prosecute Israel for its crimes is a sovereign right that cannot be relinquished in any way,” Speaker Berri underlined as he received US Congressmen Darin LaHood and Josh Gottheimer, accompanied by US Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Keith Hanigan.
The Lebanese speaker said the United States and President Donald Trump are the only parties capable of exerting sufficient pressure to compel the Israeli enemy to halt its attacks on Lebanon.
Speaker Berri identified Israeli failure to honor the terms of previous agreements aimed at ending the war as the main obstacle to implementing a ceasefire agreement in Lebanon.
On the other hand, Speaker Berri said there was still time to avoid “the mistake of not renewing the mandate” of the UN peacekeeping forces operating in southern Lebanon, known as UNIFIL.
The Security Council extended the UNIFIL’s mandate for a final time until December 31, 2026, after which the mission is scheduled to draw down and withdraw.
Speaker Berri has repeatedly warned against the termination of UNIFIL mandate.
Israeli occupation forces have continued airstrikes, artillery fire, ground operations and airspace violations in southern Lebanon on daily basis, despite the November 2024 cessation-of-hostilities agreement.

The UN has reported hundreds of Israeli projectiles and dozens of daily airspace violations, while Israeli forces continue to occupy positions in parts of Lebanese territory.
