Lebanon’s Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri warned of continued Israeli violations of the ceasefire agreement and daily attacks on southern Lebanese towns and villages, stressing that ‘Israel’ has failed to abide by successive agreements and international resolutions governing the situation in Lebanon.

Speaker Berri made the remarks during separate meetings with European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and US Senator James Paul Clanford at his residence in Beirut’s Ain Al-Tineh.

During his meeting with Kallas and her delegation, attended by EU Ambassador to Lebanon Sandra De Waal, the Lebanese speaker discussed developments in Lebanon and the region, particularly the latest political and security developments amid Israel’s ongoing violations of the ceasefire.

Speaker Berri also reiterated his warning against allowing the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) to expire without a replacement under the UN umbrella, stressing that such a step would undermine international legitimacy and UN resolutions, particularly Resolution 1701, while also affecting the EU’s role.

The Lebanese speaker also discussed with Kallas the relations between Lebanon and EU as well as the bloc’s potential role in supporting Lebanon, particularly in reconstruction efforts and backing Beirut’s position on maintaining UNIFIL’s presence.

In a separate meeting with Senator Clanford, in the presence of US Ambassador to Lebanon Michael Issa, Speaker Berri said ‘Israel’ had never adhered to any of the agreements reached since UN Security Council Resolution 425, through Resolution 1701, the November 2024 agreement and the Tripartite Framework Agreement.

“The problem remains the same: Israel’s failure to abide by the terms of all agreements,” he said in remarks carried by Al-Manar.
