The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy warned that any vessel defying its instructions and attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz via unauthorized routes risks a fiery fate, after a giant oil tanker reportedly exploded upon striking a sea mine in a designated high-risk area.

In a statement issued by its Public Relations Office on Saturday, the IRGC Navy said the tanker, which was carrying crude oil, had switched off its navigation and positioning systems before attempting to transit the strategic waterway through an unauthorized route.

“The vessel is now engulfed in flames following the reported mine strike, with the fire visible from coastal areas,” the statement read.

The IRGC Navy issued a stark warning to other vessels, declaring that a massive fire awaits any oil tanker that disregards its security instructions and regulations governing passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO)announced it has received a report of an incident within the Strait of Hormuz.

“The Master of an outbound tanker reports being struck on the port side by an unknown projectile, causing a fire on board,” a statement by the UKMTO read.

“Crew are reported safe. Damage assessment and environmental impact are unknown at time of report,” the statement added.
