Speaker Berri Meets Lacroix, Affirms Lebanon United in Support of UNIFIL’s Continued Presence

Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri meets with UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix in Ain al-Tineh to discuss the situation in southern Lebanon and UNIFIL’s mandate (October 14, 2026).

Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri said Lebanon would continue its efforts to safeguard its sovereign rights, protect its borders, and liberate every last inch of its territory from Israeli occupation, reaffirming the country’s unified official position in support of the continued presence of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

Speaker Berri made the remarks during a meeting with UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix at the Second Presidency headquarters in Ain Al-Tineh. The meeting was attended by UNIFIL Commander General Diodato Abagnara, UN Deputy Special Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator Imran Riza, and Ali Hamdan, the speaker’s media adviser, along with Lacroix’s accompanying delegation.

The discussions focused on the overall situation in Lebanon, particularly developments on the ground in UNIFIL’s area of operations in southern Lebanon, amid the Israeli occupation’s continued war on the country and violations of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

The meeting also addressed the implications of Resolution 2790 and Lebanon’s unified position on the matter, including calls to extend UNIFIL’s mandate in southern Lebanon in a manner that serves the interests of Lebanon and the south, as well as international peace and security.

Under its mandate and the provisions of Resolution 1701, UNIFIL is tasked with monitoring the international border along the Blue Line and helping ensure its delineation, particularly with regard to disputed points and locations over which Lebanon has reservations. The force also plays a role in documenting and exposing the Israeli enemy’s daily violations of Lebanese sovereignty.

During the meeting, Berri praised UNIFIL’s efforts and sacrifices over nearly half a century of operations in southern Lebanon, noting that its contribution had extended beyond security and military duties to encompass humanitarian, social, cultural, and economic activities, as well as coexistence between its personnel and local communities in its area of operations.

Speaker Berri stressed that Lebanon’s official position remained united in insisting on the force’s continued presence and the implementation of its mandate under Resolution 1701. He noted that there was consensus within Lebanon and that parliamentary efforts were under way to engage the international community and the United Nations on the issue.

He told the delegation that Lebanon would continue its efforts at all levels to safeguard its sovereign rights, protect its borders, and liberate every last inch of its territory from Israeli occupation.
