US President Donald Trump has expressed optimism about the possibility of reaching a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine ahead of the G20 leaders’ summit scheduled for December, while also suggesting that the war involving Iran could come to an end in the near future.

Speaking in an interview with conservative commentator Benny Johnson, released on Saturday, Trump said negotiations over the Russia-Ukraine conflict were approaching a potentially decisive stage, expressing confidence that an agreement could be reached.

“I think we’re getting very close to making a deal there,” Trump said, referring to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Asked about the possibility of reaching an agreement at the December G20 summit, he said there was a “real good chance” of resolving the conflict. He also acknowledged the deep differences between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Iran also featured prominently in Trump’s remarks, as the US president reiterated Washington’s determination to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

His comments came amid renewed diplomatic efforts to end the conflict involving Iran. In a separate interview with Kansas City radio station KCMO on Friday, Trump said he believed the war would end soon, although he provided no details about how a settlement could be achieved.

“We need a guarantee there’ll never be a nuclear weapon,” Trump said, outlining Washington’s central demand in any potential agreement with Tehran.
