A suicide bombing struck a mosque during Friday prayers in Pakistan’s capital, killing and wounding nearly 200 people in what authorities described as a terrorist attack targeting worshippers.

The explosion occurred as prayers were underway, causing heavy casualties among those attending the service.

Pakistani police said the attack took place at the Sayyeda Khadija Al-Kubra Mosque in Islamabad, leaving at least 31 people dead and 169 others injured, according to an initial toll released following the blast, which happened during Friday prayers.

Police sources warned that the death toll is expected to rise, noting that several of the wounded sustained critical injuries and remain in life-threatening condition.

Pakistani security officials reported that a suicide bomber detonated himself after being stopped at the entrance of the mosque, located in the Tarlai area on the outskirts of Islamabad.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the attack and called on authorities and security agencies to pursue those responsible and bring them to justice.

Images from the scene showed blood-stained bodies inside the mosque and in the adjacent courtyard, shattered glass, and scattered debris, as panic spread among worshippers.

Reports from Pakistan indicated that dozens of wounded victims were lying on the ground, while others cried out desperately for help in the aftermath of the explosion.

Iran Strongly Condemns the Attack

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmail Baqaei strongly condemned the terrorist attack at the Hazrat Khadijah al-Kubra Mosque in the Taralai area of Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, which occurred during Friday prayers and resulted in the martyrdom and injury of several worshippers.

Baqaei also offered condolences to the families of the victims as well as to the government and people of Pakistan and prayed to Almighty God for the swift recovery of those injured in this criminal act. The Foreign Ministry spokesman underlined the principled policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran to firmly condemn all forms of terrorism and violent extremism and said preventing and combating the heinous phenomenon of terrorism requires the cooperation and coordination of all countries in the region, as well as continuous efforts to confront its perpetrators, organizers, supporters, and financial backers.
