PM Salam Says State Authority Means Schools, Power, and Roads for South

During a tour of southern Lebanon beginning in Tyre, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam affirmed the government’s commitment to the region. “The people of the South have an indivisible national right, and the South is a national cause and a unifying national concern. Our presence here is to affirm that follow-up will continue through accountability, oversight, and implementation,” he stated.

Addressing the significant challenges, Salam said, “That will not deter us. After the war, we began working for the South with our limited resources until we secured two allocations for the South and its people.” He underscored the ongoing difficulties, noting, “The Tyre district, like the rest of the South, continues to face daily attacks, in addition to the presence of prisoners. However, the presence of the state sends a message against this reality, which we must work to change.”

He paid tribute to the Lebanese Army, which he said “has fulfilled and continues to fulfill its role,” while defining a broader vision for state authority. “Extending the state’s authority also means restoring electricity, schools, hospitals, and roads. If people do not see all of this, they will not return to their villages,” the Prime Minister emphasized.

Outlining the government’s plan, Salam continued, “The path is not easy, and we will not wait for the attacks to end. Our primary concern is preserving the dignity of the displaced and supporting those returning.” He detailed efforts to ensure the continuation of relief through cash assistance, free healthcare, and guaranteed education for the displaced, alongside rebuilding infrastructure and public property. “We will focus on developing urban planning so that villages will return better than before,” he added.

Concluding with a promise of sustained engagement, Salam said, “The government is not on a seasonal visit; it will remain present with you. We will begin rehabilitating the roads in Tyre and supporting the agricultural sector, and I will return soon for a second visit once implementation begins on the ground.”
