A record 129 journalists and media workers were killed worldwide in 2025, the deadliest year in three decades, Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) announced, noting that ‘Israel’ is responsible for two-thirds of these killings.
In a report, the CPJ said more journalists and media workers were killed in 2025 than in any other year since the CPJ began collecting data more than three decades ago (1992).
The committee noted that 2025 is the second consecutive year-on-year record for press deaths.
It said that ‘Israel’ was responsible for two-thirds of all press killings in both 2025 and 2024.
“The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has committed more targeted killings of journalists than any other government’s military since CPJ began documentation in 1992,” it stated, referring to Israeli occupation army forces.
Journalist killings reached a record high in 2025 — the deadliest year since CPJ began collecting data more than three decades ago. Israel was responsible for two in three of these killings, driving the total number to 129 killed last year.

“At least 104 of the 129 journalists and media workers were killed amid conflicts in 2025. While the number of journalists killed in Ukraine and Sudan increased, the majority were Palestinians killed by Israel.”
The CPJ noted pointed to a surge in drone killings of press members.
The number rose “from two in 2023 — the first year CPJ documented such killings — to 39 in 2025.”
In this context, the committee said that very few transparent investigations have been held into the cases of targeted killings documented by CPJ in 2025, and no one has been held accountable in any of these cases.
