Al Wefaq National Islamic Society on Tuesday condemned a statement by Bahrain’s Ministry of Interior, affirming it signals a security campaign on sectarian grounds and called on the government to immediately halt any planned targeting of followers of the Jaafari school.
In a statement issued on May 7, Al-Wefaq said the Interior Ministry’s May 6 statement carried “accusations and delusions based on sectarian and historical grounds,” revealing a “deep existential crisis” and a security doctrine toward other components of society. It blamed “flawed structuring and operating on a sectarian basis” in state institutions, particularly security agencies.
The opposition group said the ministry “conflated a specific event or case with the genuine existence of followers of the Jaafari school in general,” calling it a “profound and dangerous flaw” that undermines stability for Bahrain’s “loyal and indigenous people.”
Al-Wefaq accused the government of deliberately pursuing this poisonous foundation for years, saying it intensified after the Al-Bandar Report and multiplied thousands of times since the 2011 popular movements.
