Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations on Thursday urged member states to reject a joint US-Bahrain draft resolution on the Strait of Hormuz, branding the proposed text as “deeply flawed, one-sided, and politically motivated.”
Speaking during a Security Council stakeout on May 7, AmbassadorAmir Saeed Iravani argued that the resolution aims to legitimize unlawful US actions against Iran in the Persian Gulf rather than protect freedom of navigation. He stressed that the ongoing crisis stems directly from the unlawful war of aggression launched by the United States and ‘Israel’ against the Islamic Republic.
“The facts on the ground prove otherwise,” Iravani said, rejecting US claims that the measure is intended to safeguard maritime passage. “The actions of the United States stand in stark contradiction to its stated objectives and have served only to escalate tensions and deepen instability in the region.”
According to the Iranian envoy, the draft resolution ignores the root cause of the situation while advancing a “selective and distorted narrative.” He accused the measure’s sponsors of falsely attributing attacks on vessels and sea mine placements to Iran without presenting credible evidence.
Iravani further charged that invoking Chapter VII of the UN Charter which authorizes enforcement action is “wholly unjustified, disproportionate, and based on politically motivated allegations.”
“Iran remains fully prepared to restore normal maritime traffic and ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz,” the ambassador stated, “provided that the war is permanently ended and the unlawful blockade is lifted.”
Warning Security Council members against supporting the measure, Iravani concluded: “Today is Iran and tomorrow will be another state.”
He called on all UN member states to take a “principled and responsible position” by rejecting the draft resolution and refraining from co-sponsoring it.
