Hezbollah on Lebanon Constitution Centenary: No Decision Can Delegitimize Resistance

On the centenary of the Lebanese Constitution, Hezbollah called for cancelling political sectarianism and to fully implement the Taif Agreement and the constitutional provisions as well as to safeguard Lebanon from aggression.

In a statement, Hezbollah said: “On the centenary of the Constitution, the Lebanese find themselves at a pivotal moment, both domestically and regionally, one that calls more than ever for strict adherence to the Lebanese Constitution as amended by the Taif Agreement. This constitutional framework remains the binding reference for managing political differences, organizing state institutions, and preserving national unity and sovereignty.”

In this context, the Lebanese resistance group stressed the need to definitively close the chapter of mandates, high commissioners, and all forms of foreign tutelage, affirming that such an era has ended and cannot be revived in Lebanon under any guise or circumstance.

“Lebanon, as enshrined in its Constitution, is the final homeland for all its people—united in land, population, and institutions—within its constitutionally and internationally recognized borders,” the statement, released by Hezbollah’s Media Relations Department read.

It added that Lebanon cannot become a true final homeland for its people through slogans alone, “but through safeguarding its land and citizens, and through a clear national consensus that rejects occupation and aggression.”

All projects that aim at fragmentation, division, federalization, or resettlement run contrary to the core principles of the Lebanese Constitution and to the very concept of a unified Lebanon, equal for all its citizens without exception, Hezbollah affirmed.

Abolition of Political Sectarianism

Furthermore, the Lebanese resistance group called for cancelling political sectarianism in order to fully implement the constitutional reforms approved by the Taif Agreement.

“The Lebanese experience has demonstrated that the sectarian political system, in its current form, can no longer adequately produce a state that is just, efficient, and stable. Accordingly, genuine commitment to the Lebanese Constitution is not achieved through freezing its provisions or applying them selectively, but through the complete and faithful implementation of the reforms set out in the Taif Agreement, without omission, distortion, or political selectivity.”

“Foremost among these reforms is the clear national objective enshrined in the Constitution: the abolition of political sectarianism, as a foundational step toward developing Lebanon’s political and social contract, and ensuring fair and equitable participation for all Lebanese in the management of the state and its institutions,” Hezbollah statement read.

Right of Resistance

It stressed that resisting occupation and aggression “is not an act of rebellion against the state nor a breach of the Constitution; rather, it is a legitimate national right affirmed by the principles of the Lebanese Constitution and supported by Lebanon’s Arab and international commitments.”

“No political or governmental decision can deprive a people of their inherent right to defend their land, nor can it delegitimize resistance to occupation.”

The Lebanese resistance group then noted underlined that the Taif Agreement is understood as affirming Lebanon’s commitment to the liberation of its territory and maintaining a state of ongoing hostility with ‘Israel’ in light of continued occupation and threats.

“The Taif Agreement, with its emphasis on the necessity of taking all required measures to liberate Lebanese territory and its reaffirmation of the 1949 Armistice framework, leaves no ambiguity in defining Lebanon’s relationship with Israel as one marked by ongoing conflict, occupation, and security tension, rather than normalization or acceptance of the status quo.”

“Accordingly, any approach that seeks to weaken Lebanon’s defensive capabilities while occupation, aggression, and threats persist is presented in this view as inconsistent with the spirit of Taif and the constitutional order derived from it.”

The statement then underscored the urgent need for full and consistent implementation of the Taif Agreement and Lebanon’s constitutional provisions.

“What is required today, on the centenary of the Constitution, is the full implementation of the Taif Agreement and of Lebanon’s constitutional provisions without selective application or discretionary interpretation, alongside safeguarding Lebanon from aggression, rejecting any form of external tutelage, and firmly opposing all projects of partition, federalism, and resettlement.”
