Lebanese President Joseph Aoun earned on Monday approval from US Ambassador to Lebanon Michel Issa who praised the man in Beirut’s Baabda Palace over remarks he recently made regarding the direct negotiations with the Israeli enemy and anti-Iran rhetoric.

Talking to reporters after a meeting with Aoun on Monday, the US ambassador said he discussed the course of the “Lebanese-American-Israeli negotiations and their implications for ending the current situation in Lebanon.”

“I expressed to President Aoun my country’s appreciation for the positions he announced in the important interview we conducted with him a few days ago,” Issa said.

As he said that the talks are scheduled to resume in Washington, Issa commended Lebanese negotiating team, which he described as “highly professional and effective.

In remarks seen as a signal of alleged Washington’s efforts to contain tensions, Issa said: “What happened yesterday was a political message, and we in the United States have decided that the confrontation should not escalate further,” referring to the Israeli strike on Beirut’s southern suburb, Dahiyeh and Iran’s retaliatory strikes.

On the trajectory of talks between Lebanon and the Israeli enemy, he stressed gradual progress, noting, “A good meeting is one that produces positive outcomes and achieves progress, and we believe we are on the right track.”

“The negotiations may take time, as it is not expected that all issues will be resolved in one meeting, and the continuation of these negotiations positively impacts the overall situation in Lebanon and the region,” Issa added

He concluded, “We have reached a point of no return; the ice has been broken, and we are continuing to help Lebanon emerge from its crisis.”

In an interview with the CNN on Friday, Aoun said that enmity between Lebanon and ‘Israel’ “must end permanently.” He also slammed Iran, saying the Islamic Republic is using Lebanon as a “bargaining chip” in its negotiations with the US.
