Pakistan Announces Iran-US Peace Deal, Trump Orders Strait of Hormuz Reopened

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on Monday that a “peace deal” between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States has been reached.

In a statement released Monday, Sharif said that under the agreement, both sides have declared the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon.

“Following intensive talks, we are pleased to announce that the Peace Deal between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran has been REACHED,” Sharif said in the statement, which he also posted on X.

He added that an official signing ceremony will be held on Friday, 19 June, in Switzerland. Sharif thanked the United States, Iran, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey for their roles in the mediation efforts.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump, in a post on Truth Social, also claimed that “the deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete.” He further wrote: “I hereby fully authorize the toll-free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, simultaneously herewith, authorize the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade. Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!”

The announcement follows weeks of intensified violations that had tested a fragile ceasefire in place since April. The US-Israeli war of aggression against Iran began on February 28, damaging the country’s civilian and scientific infrastructure and killing thousands of people. Pakistan has acted as a key mediator between the warring sides.

In early April, a two-week ceasefire was announced after Iran submitted a ten-point plan demanding, among other things, an end to the war, the lifting of all sanctions, compensation for damages, and respect for Iran’s rights over the Strait of Hormuz.
