A new analysis published by The Atlantic on Monday argues that the US agreement with Iran marks a strategic victory for Tehran, despite President Donald Trump’s portrayal of the deal as a success.

In the article, writer Tom Nichols contends that “the peace deal with Tehran is an Iranian victory,” adding that Washington “has little to celebrate” after what he describes as a failed war effort.

Trump announced the agreement with a celebratory message — “Congratulations to all!” — but the report suggests the outcome falls far short of US objectives, with Nichols writing that the president is seeking to “spin the outcome as a victory.”

According to the analysis, “it is clear that Trump has failed to achieve every one of the goals he put forward,” arguing that the administration is now moving quickly to “sign, seal, and deliver America’s capitulation.”

The article acknowledges that Iran sustained damage during the conflict, but stresses that military strikes alone did not translate into strategic success. “Killing people and bombing things do not by themselves produce victory,” Nichols writes.

He concludes that Tehran ultimately secured its primary objectives, stating: “The Iranians have achieved their key strategic aims—regime survival above all—while the Americans have achieved none of their own.”

The analysis adds that under the terms of the anticipated agreement, Iran’s governing system remains intact, its regional capabilities persist, and financial relief could follow, reinforcing what it describes as a favorable outcome for Tehran.
