Speaker of Lebanese Parliament Nabih Berri expressed his satisfaction with the emergence of the US-Iranian memorandum of understanding, which stipulated that Lebanon be included in the resolution to end the war, noting that Lebanon is mentioned in it more than once, whether in terms of being included in ending the war, or in terms of the necessity of Israeli withdrawal from it.
This proves the propriety of my choice from the beginning to bet on the Islamabad track, without that conflicting with Lebanon’s sovereignty, Speaker Berri affirmed.
Speaker Berri praised the spontaneous return of residents to their homes in the South and the Dahieh, leaving it to the displaced to assess the situation, each according to his area, pointing out that this spontaneous return reflects the Southerners’ attachment to their land.
In response to a question about some people’s annoyance at the Iranian-American agreement, he answered: “Whoever feels annoyed or oppressed by the agreement is not Lebanese.”
He noted that the US-Iranian memorandum of understanding achieves the interest of everyone, including Lebanon, pointing out that what happened is a very important achievement, “and some did not expect us to reach this day.”
Speaker Berri expects that the comprehensive ceasefire in Lebanon will hold to a large extent, stressing that Tel Aviv has not gained freedom of action according to the MoU.
“What matters now is working to ensure Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon,” Speaker Berri said, clarifying that this matter will be included within the 60-day period of negotiations between Iran and the United States, “but that does not mean that those concerned here should not also work on this issue.”
As for whether the proposal of experimental zones is applicable, Berri confirmed that Lebanon is divided into a group of districts and not into experimental zones, “so what is required is a rapid Israeli withdrawal from the districts it occupies in the South. Therefore, there is no place in my dictionary for experimental zones, the implication of which is that withdrawal may take two years.”
Answering about what guarantees that the fate of the Lebanese part of this understanding will be different from the fate of the November 27, 2024 agreement, which was violated by the Israeli enemy, Speaker Berri replied: “This time Trump personally took the matter upon himself, and Iran is present with all its weight and oversight. We are before a major agreement broader than Lebanon.”
Speaker Berri noted that he felt anxious after the last Israeli attack on Dahieh, because he feared that the hostile strike and the Iranian response to it would disrupt the agreement, adding but Tehran did not fall into the trap and foiled Benjamin Netanyahu’s opportunity.
Speaker Berri clarified that every clause of the 14 clauses in the agreement was drafted precisely, pointing out that Tehran wove it like a carpet.
Finally, Berri stressed that patience is a fundamental factor in politics, and Tehran has proven that it is a professional in this field.
