The UK said it has dropped tariffs on all goods from Ukraine while slapping a ban on some technology exports to Moscow.
Announcing it was “responding directly to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s request,” the UK’s international trade department announced Monday that it had reduced “all tariffs on goods imported from Ukraine,” including key exports such as barley, honey, and poultry.
On her account, international trade secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan said, in a statement, that “the UK will continue to do everything in its power” to support Ukraine’s fight against what she described as “Putin’s brutal and unprovoked invasion.”
At the same time, the UK declared that it would prohibit the export of “products and technology that Russia could use to repress the heroic people of Ukraine,” possibly including what was described as “surveillance and interception equipment.”
It is worth mentioning that the UK stepped up its sanctions against Russia last week, targeting army chiefs and imposing import bans on silver, wood products, and caviar.
The war in Ukraine has sparked an outpouring of support from both sides of the Atlantic, with Western nations imposing a slew of financial sanctions and funneling weapons into Ukraine.
The latest UK measures come as Russia warns that the war, which is now in its third month, is on the verge of escalating into World War III.
For months, Zelensky has been pleading with allies to do more, including sending artillery and fighter jets, claiming that more firepower could turn the tide of the war.
