Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan on Wednesday received Jean-Yves Le Drian, French President Emmanuel Macron’s special envoy for Lebanon, in Riyadh, the Kingdom’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
The parties reviewed bilateral relations and looked at ways to extend joint coordination in many fields, as they discussed the latest developments in Lebanon, as well as in regional and international arenas, the ministry added in a statement.
Earlier on Tuesday Le Drian urged Lebanese sides to find a “third way” of electing a new president after nearly a year of power vacuum.
He warned that Paris and its allies were losing patience and could review financial aid to the economically troubled country.
Lebanon has been without a president for almost a year after Michel Aoun’s mandate expired last October. The current parliament, one of the country’s most deeply divided, has failed 12 times to elect a successor, with competing blocs backing two different candidates.
“The life of the Lebanese state itself is at risk,” Le Drian, a former French foreign minister, told AFP in an interview.
