The mass mobilization, described as the largest of its kind, is a direct response to Trump’s controversial rhetoric. Activists have hailed the demonstration as a “powerful rejection” of the displacement plan and a “reaffirmation of Egypt’s longstanding commitment to Palestinian rights.”
Protesters, including political forces, parties, unions, and civil society groups, have condemned Trump’s proposal as an “act of injustice” that would effectively be a “liquidation of the Palestinian cause.” They stressed that such a move would violate Palestinians’ fundamental right to self-determination.
Trending on social media was the hashtag #TrumpNoDisplacement, reflecting the public outcry and widespread rejection of the plan. For many Egyptians, the demonstration serves as a reminder of their country’s central role in advocating for Palestinian sovereignty.
The protests come amid reports that Trump has been pressuring Egypt and Jordan to take in forcibly displaced Palestinians, even hinting at potential aid cuts as leverage. However, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi firmly opposed the suggestion, calling it an “act of injustice” that would endanger Egypt’s security.
“If I asked the Egyptian people about Trump’s suggestion, they would take to the streets to reject the displacement of Palestinians,” el-Sisi declared during a press conference. He reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to facilitating a resolution in Palestine based on a “two-state solution,” a fundamental right that cannot be ignored.
The mass mobilization at the Rafah crossing underscores the broader national unity in Egypt in condemning any plans to forcibly displace Palestinians. For the protesters, this demonstration is a powerful message of unwavering support for Gaza and its people.
