The United States vetoed on Thursday a United Nations Security Council resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the unrestricted delivery of humanitarian aid to the besieged enclave. The draft, supported by the 14 other council members, failed to pass due to the US veto.
The resolution, drafted by the ten non-permanent members of the council, described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as “catastrophic” and called for the immediate, unconditional lifting of all barriers to aid access, ensuring broad and secure distribution by the UN and its humanitarian partners.
The US move highlights Washington’s continued diplomatic protection of Israel amid intensifying international calls to end the war. Insolently justifying the veto, US Deputy Ambassador to the UN Dorothy Shea claimed the resolution would “undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts” and “falsely equate Israel with Hamas.”
“This resolution could derail negotiations for a ceasefire that reflects realities on the ground,” Shea said, arguing it would encourage Hamas and fail to hold it accountable.
The resolution had called for an end to Israeli occupation army operations in Gaza and for full humanitarian access to civilians trapped in the conflict.
Despite broad international support, the US stood alone in blocking its passage.

Hamas, Islamic Jihad Condemn US Veto
In response, Hamas issued a statement condemning the US veto as “a blatant endorsement of the Israeli enemy’s war crimes” and “a flagrant challenge to the will of the international community.”
The group accused Washington of “deliberate obstruction” of global efforts to halt the conflict and described the US position as “arrogant, biased, and dismissive of international law.”
“The veto provides a green light for Zionist Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to continue the genocide against Palestinian civilians,” the statement read, adding that the US is “a full partner in this ongoing crime.”
Hamas warned that the Security Council’s repeated failure to stop the massacres and lift the siege raises serious questions about the credibility of international institutions and their silence in the face of continuous violations.
Similarly, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad condemned the veto, accusing the U.S. of backing “a savage war of extermination” and legitimizing the Zionist enemy’s actions in Gaza.
“The Biden administration, like its predecessor under Donald Trump, shows no fundamental difference in its uncritical support for Israel,” the group said, criticizing regimes that continue to rely on US policies while Washington arms and shields the Israeli enemy “diplomatically.”
This move marks yet another instance of the US using its veto power to shield Israel from UN measures related to its military actions in Gaza. Since the onset of the war in October 2023, Washington has repeatedly obstructed Security Council efforts to broker a ceasefire or open safe humanitarian corridors, despite near-unanimous backing from other members.
