Earlier in the day, the Xinhua news agency reported that Chinese President Xi Jinping held a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

During the meeting with the Chinese president, North Korea’s head Kim Jong-un said Tuesday that the North won’t need any nuclear weapons if the international stakeholders refrain from hostile policies toward the country.

“Denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula is the clear position North Korea has always adhered to. As long as relevant sides remove hostile policies and security threats toward North Korea, it’s not necessary for the nation to have nuclear weapons. Denuclearization is achievable. I hope North Korea and the United States can build mutual trust through dialogue. All sides need to take phased and synchronized measures to push forward the peaceful solution to the issues on the Korean Peninsula, to realize denuclearization and long-lasting peace on the peninsula,” Kim said, as quoted by the Xinhua news agency.

Speaking further, Kim noted that he expected to build trust-based relations with the US via dialogue. At the same time, the North expects an all-round progress in the solution of the Korean issue.
