Russia sought Saturday to block a United Nations Security Council meeting on Venezuela, accusing the United States of plotting a coup against President Nicolas Maduro. Its bid quickly failed, with nine of the 15 Security Council members agreeing to hold the session attended by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
The United States on Thursday called for a meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the crisis in Venezuela, the US mission to the United Nations said. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is expected to attend the open meeting requested for Saturday, diplomats said.
