A fire broke out in the Beirut Port’s duty free zone on Thursday, one month after deadly blast at the port killed nearly 200 people, injured 6,500 others and left tens of thousands of people homeless.
Lebanese Army Command announced via Twitter that a store of oil and tires at the port’s Duty Free zone caught fire. The massive flames and smoke were seen covering the sky in the area.
Fire extinguishing operations are underway, and army helicopters are taking part in the process, the army command added.
Vehicles belonging to the Beirut Fire Brigade and the Civil Defense arrived at the port and are working on extinguishing the fire. Teams from the Red Cross have also attended the scene, local media reported.
Secretary General of Lebanese Red Cross George Kettaneh said there were no casualties in the fire so far.
