President Michel Aoun said on Thursday that the Beirut port blaze could either be a deliberate act of vandalism or a result of negligence or ignorance, highlighting the obligation to punish those who had caused it.
“Any mistake of any kind that leads to such a fire is no longer acceptable, especially after the disaster caused by the first blaze,” he told the Higher Defense Council which convened after the incident.
During the meeting, the President tasked the caretaker minister of transportation, the commanders of the security agencies, and the administration of Beirut Port to set a new work mechanism at the port that preserves the public safety.
A fire broke out in the Beirut Port’s duty free zone on Thursday, one month after deadly blast at the port killed nearly 200 people, injured 6,500 others and left tens of thousands of people homeless.
The Lebanese army announced that the Military Police started the investigations into the Beirut port fire upon the notice of the Public Military Prosecution.
It is worth noting that the latest reports indicated that the firefighters managed to extinguish most of the blaze.
