Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could end his 12 consecutive years in power in five days, as Parliament Speaker Yariv Levin announced on Tuesday that a vote would be held next Sunday.
In a statement, Levin said that the new Israeli government led by Prime Minister-designate Naftali Bennett and Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid would be brought to a vote of confidence and be sworn in during a special session of the Knesset on Sunday.
The eight-party “change government” alliance, headed by Bennett and Lapid, anticipates winning a 61-59 majority in the vote, Times of Israel reported.
Levin also said a new Knesset speaker would be chosen during the same session.
The Israeli Knesset doesn’t normally convene on Sundays.
Lapid congratulated the setting of the date for the vote, tweeting “It’s happening!” He thanked Levin for setting the date for Sunday.
Yisrael Beytenu chairman Avigdor Liberman also responded, tweeting, “A little more and it’s happening. A government that comes to rebuild the economy, comes to work, comes to make order here!”
