The Iranian Foreign Ministry’s spokesman dismissed the “groundless and worthless” allegations that the president of Ukraine has made against Tehran, describing them as a political show aimed at distracting the public attention.
In a statement released on Saturday, Nasser Kanaani denounced Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s recent remarks against Iran as an attempt to pin the blame on others and divert public opinion, saying such a political show with baseless claims is worthless.
In a televised address on Wednesday, Zelensky accused Iran of supplying Russia with drones for the war in Ukraine and called on Iran to not side with what he called the “evil” Russian state and be complicit in its “terror” campaign.
In response, Kanaani said Iran has always expressed its opposition to war in Ukraine and its continuation and feels sympathy for the pains and miseries of the Ukrainian people.
The Islamic Republic of Iran stresses the need for a political solution to end the war in Ukraine in the shortest time possible and is prepared to contribute to such a solution, the spokesman added.
“The repetition of the Ukrainian president’s bogus claims against the Islamic Republic of Iran is to the accompaniment of the propaganda and media warfare that the anti-Iran axis has waged against the Iranian government and nation, and takes place with the purpose of attracting more arms and financial supports from the Western countries,” Kanaani added.
The political claims and shows against Iran will not change the realities of the Ukraine war, the spokesperson underlined, expressing Iran’s readiness to proceed with expert negotiations with Ukraine.
“The fact that the Ukrainian side dodges the expert negotiations with the Iranian side in order to discuss the claims reveals that they (Ukraine’s claims) are groundless and that there are specific political objectives and motives behind such accusations against the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Kanaani concluded.
Tehran has multiple times rejected in the strongest terms the Western claims of Iran’s delivery of weapons and drones to Russia to be used against Ukraine, saying the country has had defense cooperation with Moscow for a long time and pursues a resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy.
