Palestinian factions met in Egypt on Sunday to discuss reconciliation efforts amid increasing clashes with the Israeli enemy in the occupied West Bank.
The meeting, chaired by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, seeks to restore inter-Palestinian unity among various factions, according to media reports.
The Palestinian embassy noted that the Palestinian president and his Egyptian counterpart Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi are scheduled to meet on Monday.
The meeting has been boycotted by the Islamic Jihad as well as other factions in protest of the political arrests made by the PLO in the West Bank.
Head of the Political Bureau of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, reaffirmed the Palestinians’ unequivocal right to resist and stand up against the ongoing aggression by the Israeli regime in the occupied territories.
Speaking at the meeting of the Palestinian factions’ general secretaries in the Egyptian coastal city of el-Alamein, Haniyeh emphasized the crucial need to fortify the steadfastness of the Palestinian people in countering the relentless Israeli crimes in the occupied cities of West Bank and al-Quds.
During the gathering, the senior Hamas official made a compelling call to denounce all commitments that infringe upon the Palestinian people’s fundamental right to resist the Israeli occupation. Haniyeh underscored the urgency of rebuilding and developing the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), advocating for the formation of a new national council that unites all Palestinian parties to conduct free and democratic elections.
Additionally, Haniyeh urged the establishment of Palestinian institutions in both the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, specifically for conducting presidential and legislative elections. He passionately called for immediate action to bring an end to the Israeli blockade that has been suffocating the besieged coastal enclave for far too long.
According to Palestinian media, the agenda of the gathering included discussions on “ways to restore national unity and end the division” between the various Palestinian resistance groups, highlighting the shared objective of unifying their efforts against the occupation and pursuing their rightful aspirations for self-determination.
