Araqchi: US Sanctions Breach MoU; Iran Won’t Stay Silent

Iran has sharply escalated its rhetoric against the United States, with top diplomats accusing Washington of systematically breaching the recently signed Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) while asserting that Tehran has remained fully compliant with its own obligations under the accord.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi took to social media on Saturday to call out the US Treasury Department, condemning its latest round of anti-Iran sanctions as a direct infringement of the agreement’s terms. “Iran has so far honored its word, unlike the US Treasury Secretary, who is actively violating Page 9 of the MoU,” Araqchi posted on X, referencing the Treasury’s decision to impose new punitive measures on Tehran. He further emphasized that this infraction is not an isolated incident, adding that it “follows other violations and missteps by the United States.”

Reinforcing the hardline stance, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei underscored that the Islamic Republic’s policy remains firmly anchored in the doctrine of “commitment for commitment.” In a televised interview on Friday night, Baqaei detailed a litany of US breaches, pointing out that Washington has contravened various clauses of the 14-point memorandum within just 22 days of its signing.

Baqaei specifically cited US military strikes on Iranian targets on Wednesday and Thursday as a blatant transgression of the MoU’s first and second clauses, which explicitly mandate a cessation of all hostile military operations. He further denounced the revocation of Iran’s oil export license and the imposition of new financial sanctions as flagrant violations of provisions dedicated to sanctions relief and economic normalization.

“Iran has always made it clear that it will not implement any commitment without reciprocal action from the other side,” Baqaei stated. “Given that the United States has already violated its pledges, the Islamic Republic has taken—and will continue to take—the necessary responsive measures,” he concluded, signaling that Tehran is prepared to escalate its countermeasures in response to ongoing US pressure.
