High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, led a European Commission delegation to discuss the latest developments with the senior Lebanese officials in Beirut.
In presence of EU Ambassador to Lebanon, Sandra De Waele, Borrel and his delegation met with the Lebanese House Speaker Nabih Berri at Ain al-Tineh Residence.
Discussions reportedly focused on the regional situation, particularly in light of Israel’s ongoing aggression against Gaza and Lebanon, and its security and political implications for Middle East stability.
Berri expressed his “deep appreciation” for Borrell’s humanitarian stance, noting his “commitment to truth and justice concerning the Israeli assault on Gaza and Lebanon, which has continued for almost a year.”
“Lebanon does not seek war, but it has the right and the ability to defend itself,” Berri added.
Addressing Borrell directly, Berri also noted, “You witnessed firsthand Israel’s arrogance and hostility during your visit to UNIFIL forces in Naqoura, southern Lebanon.”
On domestic politics, Berri affirmed that the government was functioning within its constitutional powers, particularly amid the presidential vacuum.
“We are working seriously to resolve this issue, as demonstrated by the initiative we launched over a year ago,” Berri concluded.
Other Meetings
Borrel and the EU delegation also met on Thursday with Caretaker Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, at the Grand Serail, Caretaker Foreign Minister Abdullah Bou Habib, and Army Chief General Joseph Aoun.
