A Saudi officer was killed and two others were injured when their patrol car was hit by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Qatif in Eastern Province, interior ministry and local sources said.
Saudi interior ministry announced on its account on Twitter that the incident occurred in the Musawwara neighborhood in Awamiyah at around 11:30 on Sunday evening while the officers were on duty and that an investigation into the incident had been launched.
The ministry identified the killed officer as Major Tariq Bin Abdul Lateef Al Allaqi, adding that the two other officers were in stable condition.
Meanwhile, local sources in the besieged neighborhood also reported the incident but stressed that the officers’ patrol was hit by the random shells launched by Saudi forces against the peaceful residents in Musawwara.
The Musawwara neighborhood comprises historic buildings in Awamiyah. It has been for weeks besieged by Saudi regime forces, who had warned the residents to evacuate the area in a bid to destruct its buildings and build “modern compounds.”
However, the residents reject the destruction operation, arguing that the buildings in Musawwara neighborhood are ancient structures that belong to the area’s historical memory, and noting that the Saudi authorities can repair the building as they did with several areas across the Kingdom.
