The Lebanese parliament endorsed during a legislative session on Friday the new electoral law based on proportionality.
The session, which started at 2 p.m. (Local Time), remained for three hours as the members of the parliament were discussing the articles of the law and conducting few amendments.
Speaker Nabih Berri called on the government to open an extraordinary legislative session as soon as possible so that the legislature can “look into legislative issues and regain people’s confidence.”
He reiterated keenness on the rights of Lebanon’s sects, adding that the political settlement over the new election law does not harm anybody.
Earlier on Wednesday, the government announced a new election law after a cabinet meeting .
The current parliament’s term will be extended for 11 months to prepare for elections under the new rules in May 2018.
