65 members of the Lebanese parliament named MP Saad Hariri for premiership during the binding parliamentary consultations held on Thursday by President Michel Aoun at Baabda Palace to designate a new prime minister.
After the end of the consultations, the presidency issued a statement in which it announced tasking Hariri to form the new government, adding that 53 MPs refrained from naming any figure for premiership and two others were absent.
PM-designate Saad Hariri said he would work to form speedily a new government which would be composed of non-partisan specialists, vowing to halt the economic collapse in the country.
It is worth noting the Lebanese parliament is composed of 128 members; however, eight of them resigned during the recent political escalation in the country.
On August 10, 2020, the caretaker prime minister Hassan Diab announced the resignation of the government amid a political crisis which was tackled by a French initiative with two visits paid by President Emmanuel Macron to Lebanon within few weeks.
On August 31, President Michel Aoun tasked the former ambassador to Germany, Mustaf Adib, to form the new government, after he rejected to cooperate with the various political forces and abide by the stipulations of the French initiative.
