Two powerful earthquakes hit southern Turkey and northern Syria, killing more than 7,100 people as it toppled buildings and triggered a frantic search for survivors in the rubble in cities and towns across the area.

Rescuers in Syria and Turkey are looking for survivors beneath rubble. Authorities feared the death toll from Monday’s pre-dawn earthquake and aftershocks would keep climbing as rescuers searched for survivors among tangles of metal and concrete.
