Iranian Majlis (Parliament) Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said on Monday that a Joint Commission meeting of Iran and Russia provides both countries with a chance to fight US sanctions.
He made the remarks in a joint press conference in Tehran with visiting Chairman of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Vyacheslav Volodin.
There are also shared threats facing both Iran and Russia, the Iranian speaker said, referring to arbitrary US sanctions against Iran, Russia, and other countries.
He said that such threats require further cooperation between the two countries and deepening bilateral relations in different areas.
Qalibaf said that during a meeting today, he and the Russian official discussed a wide range of issues including investment in the area of oil and gas and facilitating the swap of gas between the two countries.
He also said that the two sides also discussed the launch of a strategically important International North-South Transit Corridor (INSTC) which he said is of special significance not only for Iran and Russia but also for part of Eurasian countries and Central Asia.
Qalibaf said that they stressed the need for both countries to make joint investments in Rasht-Astara railroad as a final part of the INSTC project.
